The TOEFL exam is of 2 types, TOEFL iBT and TOEFL Essentials. ETS did not mention any TOEFL eligibility criteria for these 2 TOEFL tests. As there is no particular TOEFL exam qualification, the candidates can check the necessary considerations to attempt the TOEFL test.

TOEFL Exam Eligibility - Age Limit

Many students have doubts regarding the TOEFL exam eligibility criteria for age. Here the official TOEFL website ETS, did not specify the age limit for TOEFL. The majority of students attempt the TOEFL exam to apply for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in abroad countries.

For applicants of age 15 or below - Students who are age 15 years or below, must be accompanied by parents or guardians during the test.

TOEFL Eligibility - Education Qualifications

There is no TOEFL exam eligibility for education. However, students who are willing to study higher education in English-speaking countries have to complete their 10+2 education to appear for the TOEFL test.

ID Requirements - It is one of the main and specified TOEFL eligibility requirements by ETS TOEFL. The ID requirements for candidates vary from country to country.

TOEFL Exam Eligibility - Few considerations in ID requirements

There are a few things to be considered while submitting the ID for the TOEFL exam. They are as follows.

• The name on the ID and the TOEFL application should be the same.

• The original ID is only acceptable(not the photocopy or electronic copy).

• ID must be issued by the government of their home country where their citizenship lies.

• A valid ID without any expiry.

• ID should include details like name, date of birth, recent photograph, and signature.

• Applicants who are of age 15 or below, must also submit the ID proof of the parent or guardian.

TOEFL Exam Eligibility for Indians

As English is not a native language in India, the Indian candidates meet the TOEFL eligibility to attend the test. The required age and education are Indian students should align with the university admission requirement for which they are attempting the TOEFL test. For instance, if the candidate wants to pursue a UG course abroad they need 18 years of age and 10+2 education qualification for attempting the TOEFL.

TOEFL Exam Eligibility for Home-Based Test

The TOEFL eligibility for the TOEFL iBT, PBT, and home-based tests are all the same. However, the candidates attempting the TOEFL home edition need to meet certain testing requirements before registering for the TOEFL.

The following are the necessary testing requirements needed to be arranged by the candidates for the TOEFL home edition.

• Computer - A computer and a stable internet connection will be suitable for attempting the test.

• Browsers - ES Secure and Proctor Communication browsers installed.

• Speakers - Internal and external speakers

• Microphone - Internal and external microphone which isn’t a part of the headset, as headsets are not allowed.

• Camera - A separate or inbuilt camera is allowed. It must be able to move 360 degrees rotation.

• A tabletop for placing the computer and keyboard.

• A private room without any disturbance.

• A proper dressing code with face and ears visibility.

• A whiteboard or transparent sheet with an erasable marker

TOEFL Fee Details

Once check the TOEFL exam eligibility, candidates can check the TOEFL exam fees required for application purposes. The TOEFL exam fee 2024 in India is USD 205. The exam fee for the TOEFL iBT exam in Indian currency is INR 17,087. Those who have opted for the TOEFL Essential test would be paying a TOEFL exam fee of USD 120 (i.e., INR 10,002/-)

About TOEFL 2024

With the help of TOEFL, the English proficiency level of the candidate is measured. TOEFL score helps candidates to get placed in abroad universities where the mode of teaching is in the English language. Once the candidate meets TOEFL exam eligibility, they can proceed with TOEFL registration.

There are two types of TOEFL tests -

• TOEFL iBT

• TOEFL Essential

Even though the test features like the TOEFL syllabus and pattern are different, the TOEFL eligibility for both tests is the same.

1. TOEFL iBT- The TOEFL iBT is an academic test. This is one of the most opted TOEFL tests and it is used by up to 97% of TOEFL test takers.

2. TOEFL Essential - The TOEFL Essential is a test that involves both academic and general content in the test. The test has been recently introduced and is gaining importance. The main difference between the TOEFL iBT and TOEFL essential is the test duration, which is shorter for the TOEFL essential and the test utility is beyond academic purposes.

There are a total of 5 types of test options in TOEFL. However, the above-mentioned tests are the ones that are used as eligibility tests to study abroad in universities and schools. Other TOEFL tests like TOEFL Primary, TOEFL Junior, and TOEFL ITP are the same English measuring and guiding tests but for different age groups starting from 8 years to 16+ years and are used only for English language improvement.
